Letter from Don Hawkins

George,

I was in Stalag Luft 1, North 2, Barracks 3, Rm 3 from early Sept 44 to May 45. Like and respect your Web Page on Barth very much. I was a 2nd Lt flying P51s from 325th Ftr Gp, in Italy. Bailed out Aug 23, 44. Ref Col Spicer`s speech, as I recall the event, was after morning roll call wherein we were gathered outside his barracks and he proceeded to jump upon a tree stump to render it. I also witnessed the facial expression on the Major Steinhauer`s face when Spicer called them liars and cheats. I remained in the Air Corps after returning to US. And in 1951 served under Col Spicer at Williams AFB where, as a Captain, I instructed Aviation Cadets in F-80s. He remained in the Air Training Command until his retirement. I retired from the Air Force in 1975 as a Colonel. Springfield, Mo is my home town, having grown up here and marrying a girl whom I knew in high school.

Two others from Stalag 1 live here: William H Mildren (North 1) and H C Bridges (North 2). I am sure it was a real thrill for you to be able to fly into Barth for the Reunion in 2000. I like to read all of the stories as each one fills me in on areas I had forgotten about.

Good luck. Don Hawkins
